Warm-up:  Write a reflection about how satisfied you are with your essay so far.  What do you still need to change and do to make it better?


Classwork:  Guidance presentation; Conclusion station (write a reflection about what type of conclusion would work best for your essay and list ideas of what you will add),  peer editing and review (use checklist)

Directions for final draft:
Format:
a) Typed, double spaced, 12 point font (NOT bold) – your font should look like the font on this page (Times New Roman)
b) Name, period and date in upper right hand corner
c) Skip one line, then original title centered – not underlined, italicized or in quotes
d) Skip two lines, then begin your essay.  Indent all paragraphs 5 spaces or one tab.
e) Do not skip lines between paragraphs


Homework:  Final Draft due Monday

I will collect 2 packets:
1.  Final draft with rubric and visual artifact
2.  Rough draft with stations (SEXI, Intros, sample essays, revised body using 5 to 8 models, conclusion)

Warm-up:  Read the description of an 8 essay on your rubric.  List in your notebook all the adjectives that describe what an 8 looks like.  Then for each adjective, evaluate your draft to decide if you are meeting that standard.  If not, what should you do to improve?


Classwork:  Station that compares 2 essays on the same photo (one is a 5, one is an 8)  explain what is better, body paragraph and conclusion work, peer editing

Station work on 5 to 8 essays:

On your station looseleaf, identify a body paragraph that is weak (ex: paragraph 2) and then write a few sentences that you will add to that body paragraph to clarify your analysis.  Use the samples as a model.



Homework:  Revise essays - work on station work

Warm-up:  SWhich of your 3 pieces of visual rhetoric has the most potential to make a great essay?  Is that already your strongest outline?  What do you still have to add to your discussion of the piece to create a strong essay?  Which of your 3 pieces is weakest?  Why?


Classwork:  selection of type of visual rhetoric to develop into final draft, presentation of SEXI writing model (w/ model handout) to guide improvements to rough draft


Homework:  Finish writing or typing a final version of a rough draft.  This should be thorough, insightful and full length.  Do not bring in merely a sketch of what is to come or you will not have time to develop it into something worthwhile.

Warm-up:  Copy the assignment - Complete photography pre-writing questions, outline or write draft of photography essay

Classwork:  Complete 13 photography questions, write photography essay/outline

Homework:  Make sure that your three drafts (ads, cartoons, and photos) are finished.  Make them as perfect as possible without the information that you will be getting next week during station work.  The better your drafts are, the less you will have to fix.

9/20

Warm-up:  Reflect on your cartoon essay outline.  Do you feel like you fully and accurately understood and reflected the message the cartoonist was trying to convey?  Do you feel that you could do a better job writing about your choice of ad or cartoon?  Why?


Classwork:  discuss and revise cartoon outlines, group photo analysis of a Columbine photograph - model the thesis writing process


Homework:  Bring in news photographs (at least 2) for Friday

Warm-up:  SLook at the Dodge Durango ad on LOC pg 50 and answer the following questions:
SOf what is this ad trying to convince its audience?
SWho or what IS the potential or intended audience of the ad?
SWhat devices does the ad use in order to persuade and convince its audience?



Classwork:  Go over LOC quiz, Select your best advertisement and complete the 20 questions on your ad essay planning handout (in classroom documents under visual rhetoric analysis tab)


Homework:  Finish advertising questions, find 2 political cartoons and 2 news photographs

Warm-up:  SSwitch notebooks with a neighbor.  Read the draft of their JFK essay.  Highlight what you think is their thesis statement(s).  At the end of their essay, write your name and a commendation (something they did well) and a recommendation (something you think that they should revise or improve upon). 


Classwork:  JFK essay discussion and modeling, read LOC pg 49-51, group work to decide thesis of an advertisement


Homework:  Bring 2 advertisements, LAST DAY for PSAT registration

Warm-up:  SThesis statements must include the author’s purpose and what strategies or ideas they use to accomplish this purpose.
SOrganization could be done various ways.  Some suggestions include by strategy, by purpose or by chronology. 
SWrite a sample thesis statement for an essay about how JFK uses rhetorical strategies to accomplish his purpose.


Classwork:  Discussion of thesis statements and organization of analytical essays; Compose an essay that analyzes how JFK uses rhetorical strategies to accomplish his purpose in his inaugural address


Homework:  Bring in at least 2 full page advertisements from magazines (share magazines with friends if your family has many), PSAT registration is due!

Warm-up:  Using your knowledge on speech arrangement, read the BBC speech on the top of page 29 and simply identify the type of organization/arrangement this speaker used to build upon their speech and briefly explain your reasoning.


Classwork:  Picture Day, discussing when rhetoric misses its mark, read the Diana speeches to analyze the speaker, audience, purpose, subject, and effectiveness


Homework:  (finish any classwork for homework) Diana speeches analysis
Study for tomorrow's quiz on chapter 1 of LOC, make sure you know the bolded terms and how to identify appeals, the rhetorical triangle, and counterargument

Warm-up:  Take a pink slip and fill out your name, ID #, Teacher (Fetterolf), Course (AP Lang), Book Name (Language of Comp.), circle Year, date and sign.  You will add book number when I give you the text.

PSAT registration is due to Mr. Colding at lunch this week or next.


Classwork:  Read and discuss LOC pg 1-9.  Students should take notes as we review the basics of rhetoric.  Pay special attention to rhetorical triangle, appeals, and counterarguments.


Homework:  Finish reading pg 1-9 of Language of Composition (LOC) and complete the assignment on pg 9-10.
