1/9

Warm-up:  What is the argument of your book so far?  How is the writer developing that argument?

Classwork:  quiz on independent book, go over first passage of AP test, explain style analysis assignment and give time to start.

Independent Book Style Analysis

Write an answer of at least a couple of sentences to answer each question.

1.  How is the book organized?  Chapters, parts, essays?  Note any kind of transition or division.
2.  Is the book formal and academic?  Casual and conversational?  Austere or flowery?  Journalistic or poetic?  Descriptive or strictly factual?  Explain with examples.
3.  Is the book objective or subjective?  How do you know?
4.  Does the author seem credible on the subject?  How does s/he develop that credibility?
5.  After completing the activity below, explain the author’s typical sentence structure and what patterns are common.

Then choose 1 full page of text from pages 100-110.  Do not choose a page that has a graphic or chapter heading.  For that page complete the following tasks.

1.     Label each sentence as simple, compound, complex, or compound complex.
2.     Circle the subject and verb of each clause – independent and/or subordinate.
3.     Count the number of periods, semicolons, and colons used to separate independent clauses.  Note the number of any other punctuation marks – dashes, colons (not used to separate independent clauses), parentheses, etc.

Homework:  Finish style analysis assignment for tomorrow; finish book by Wed 15th
