Thursday:  Carefully read Thoreau's "Where I Lived and What I Lived for on pg 276-281 of LOC.  On loose-leaf paper, write a paraphrase of each paragraph.  Make sure that you clarify the main ideas and meaning.  Turn in paraphrase to substitute at the end of class.

Friday:  Complete Discussion questions 1, 3 & 6 on LOC pg 281 and rhetoric and style questions 1 through 9 and #12 on LOC pg 281-2.  (13 questions total)  Turn these questions into substitute by the end of class.

Homework:  Due Monday - Read "In Search of the Good Family" on LOC pg 283-8 and complete questions 1-8 on pg 288-9.

Also, complete SAT registration if you haven't already.

Warm-up:  Look over the list of argumentative prompts (at front of rows) and write a reflection.  What are the different types of questions?  Which would be hardest and easiest to answer?  Why?  What argumentative techniques would you try to emulate from essays we have read this year?

Classwork:  SAT codes; discuss argumentative essays; look for examples of how King used strategies, read and discussed sample essays about the 2007 prompt (incentives for charities)

Warm-up:  Write one sentence with a favorable slant about Beyonce lip-synching at Obama’s inauguration.  Then write a second sentence with an unfavorable slant. 
Review for A-S test.
Although Beyonce was lip-synching at the actual inauguration, she still had the talent to record those tracks, and she did what she had to do to preserve the integrity and majesty of the event despite the terrible wind conditions.
Even though that was her voice on the recording, Beyonce showed her lack of skill and professionalism at the inauguration by resorting to lip-synching.  

Classwork:  write essay about style, syntax or slant for A-S test

Warm-up:  Evaluate your book.  How well did the author make his/her argument?  Explain.  Why is or isn’t this an important book for students to read?  In what ways does the writing in this book seem like the type of writing you will be required to produce in your academic career?

Classwork:  Using the models provided, write an AP style argumentative prompt about a major debatable issue of your independent book, then make a brief outline about how you (or others) would answer with evidence from the text; bloodthirsty 3rd passage of AP test

Warm-up:  What is the argument of your book so far?  How is the writer developing that argument?

Classwork:  quiz on independent book, go over first passage of AP test, explain style analysis assignment and give time to start.

Independent Book Style Analysis

Write an answer of at least a couple of sentences to answer each question.

1.  How is the book organized?  Chapters, parts, essays?  Note any kind of transition or division.
2.  Is the book formal and academic?  Casual and conversational?  Austere or flowery?  Journalistic or poetic?  Descriptive or strictly factual?  Explain with examples.
3.  Is the book objective or subjective?  How do you know?
4.  Does the author seem credible on the subject?  How does s/he develop that credibility?
5.  After completing the activity below, explain the author’s typical sentence structure and what patterns are common.

Then choose 1 full page of text from pages 100-110.  Do not choose a page that has a graphic or chapter heading.  For that page complete the following tasks.

1.     Label each sentence as simple, compound, complex, or compound complex. 
2.     Circle the subject and verb of each clause – independent and/or subordinate.
3.     Count the number of periods, semicolons, and colons used to separate independent clauses.  Note the number of any other punctuation marks – dashes, colons (not used to separate independent clauses), parentheses, etc.

1. read passage first to get the gist – think about SOAPSTone
2.  go back to lines in questions – really investigate
3.  pace yourself (about 15 mins per passage)
4.  can take guesses without penalty (but only 20% chance)
5.  don’t panic, just do your best and trust your reading ability – don’t think about answer patterns or doubt yourself
